Lawrence County was founded and became Kentucky’s 69th County in 1821. It was formed from Floyd and Greenup counties. The County was named after the Naval Officer, James Lawrence who served in the Tripolitian War. A year later the County Seat, Louisa was founded and named for the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River. |

Lawrence County lies on the extreme eastern part of the state along the Kentucky, West Virginia boundary. Running right through the heart of Lawrence County is the US 23 Country Music Highway, which serves as the primary transportation in and out of Louisa.
Modeled after dams of the 1800’s, Lawrence County built the 1st Needle Dam in the Country which is Located in Louisa. |
